The Christie Patterson Cancer Research Centre Manchester

The Christie Paterson Cancer Research Centre is a 10-storey, 270,000 sq ft development and is the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe.

The building is part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre and is one of the top cancer research centres in the world. It was built to replace the previous building, which was severely damaged in a fire.

The state-of-the-art facility on Wilmslow Road is directly connected to The Christie Hospital. The cancer research centre is home to world-leading scientists, researchers, clinicians, and operational staff who will deliver clinical trials covering the full extent of the patient pathway, from prevention and novel treatments to living with and beyond cancer.

“The full extent of the patient pathway”

The centre is the result of a highly successful partnership between The Christie, Cancer Research UK, and The University of Manchester

Rigorous Design Requirements

Architects BDP specified Novastruct’s architectural aluminium glazing systems as they were able to meet the rigorous design requirements and complex nature of the scheme.

Novastruct’s FSX 110 SSG Structurally Silicone Glazed Curtain Wall system was used throughout the ground floor and stairwells of the centre.

The upper levels of the main façade were subject to significant levels of building movement between floors. This required the system to accommodate combinations of imposed and live load deflections of up to +/-19mm. Novastruct’s major project team developed a bespoke solution.

The system was additionally weather tested to CWCT Sequence B, including a structural movement module.

An Exciting Development

The new building, built by Vinci Construction, now benefits from abundant natural light, thermal performance and protection from the elements.

The completed project was a finalist for the Project of the Year in the Positive Impact Category at the Mixology North 23 Awards, thanks to its humanfocussed design, combining both the clinical and the research aspects to put treatment at its core. Also, in the Public Sector & Cultural Category. It was also shortlisted for the Greater Manchester Chamber, UK Building of the Year award, in recognition of its design quality, construction techniques, sustainability credentials and community benefits.

Novastruct is delighted to have been involved in this project which is a spectacular addition to Manchester’s skyline and an exciting development in the fight against cancer.
